Meghan Markle appears to have faced a fresh setback in her relationship with the Royal Family after King Charles did not publicly acknowledge her 45th birthday. The omission came just weeks after Meghan and Prince Harry reunited with the monarch at a private Highgrove meeting, fuelling speculation about the limits of their reported reconciliation.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex travelled to the UK last month with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, allowing Charles to spend private time with his grandchildren. Buckingham Palace acknowledged the meeting, but the family has remained notably tight-lipped about what happened during the highly anticipated reunion.
Following that meeting, some royal watchers expected Meghan to receive a public birthday message from the King’s official channels. Her 45th birthday was considered a significant milestone, particularly because royal tradition has previously seen milestone birthdays acknowledged even when the person celebrating is no longer a working member of the Royal Family.
Prince Harry received a public birthday tribute when he turned 40, making the absence of a similar message for Meghan particularly noticeable. Royal and foreign policy commentator Lee Cohen interpreted the omission as a significant signal for the Duchess of Sussex. Speaking to Express UK, he argued that Meghan should not assume that the recent reunion between Harry and Charles automatically means the door is opening for her return to royal life.
Cohen was highly critical of Meghan’s previous relationship with the institution and accused her of bringing controversy and unwanted attention to the monarchy. He argued that her public criticism was fundamentally at odds with the traditional royal values of duty, discretion and service.
The commentator also pointed to Harry and Meghan’s interviews, documentaries and other public discussions about their experiences within the Royal Family. Their decision to speak openly about their grievances has remained one of the biggest obstacles to rebuilding trust between the Sussexes and other senior royals.
Meghan herself has previously described aspects of her royal experience as traumatic and has indicated that returning to life within the institution was not something she wanted. Those comments make any discussion about a potential royal comeback particularly complicated, even as reports continue to suggest that relations with Charles may be improving.
Harry’s position could also be different from Meghan’s because his relationship with his father appears to have entered a more personal phase. Charles’ desire to maintain contact with Archie and Lilibet could provide a foundation for rebuilding his relationship with his younger son, regardless of what happens between the wider family members.
However, Cohen believes Meghan should not expect the same opportunity. He argued that the Duchess had damaged too many relationships during her time as a senior royal and claimed that another opportunity to return should not be offered.
The latest controversy therefore highlights the complicated nature of the Sussexes’ reported reconciliation with King Charles. A private meeting between a father, son and grandchildren may represent an important emotional step, but it does not necessarily resolve the much wider tensions that have developed over several years.
For now, Meghan’s missed birthday greeting has become another talking point surrounding the Sussexes and the Royal Family. Whether it was simply a decision to maintain distance or a deliberate message from the Palace remains unclear, but it has certainly reignited debate over how far the current reconciliation can really go.
