Zara Tindall Makes Family Her Priority as Mike Faces Heartbreak After Father’s Death

Zara Tindall is reportedly making her grieving husband Mike and their family her priority following the death of his father Phil, stepping up to support him during an emotional period as the wider Royal Family faces a turbulent time of its own.

Mike recently announced that his father had died aged 80 after living with Parkinson’s disease for more than two decades, sharing the heartbreaking news during an episode of The Good, The Bad & The Rugby.

The long battle with the condition meant Mike and Zara’s three children — Mia, Lena and Lucas — never had the opportunity to know their grandfather before Parkinson’s dramatically changed his life.

The insider claimed there is also some comfort for the family in knowing Phil’s long struggle has ended. “In so many ways, there’s a sense of relief that Phil’s finally pain-free,” the source said.

“All his dad’s problems are over and it’s up to him to help the family pick up the pieces,” the insider continued, describing the responsibility Mike reportedly feels following his father’s death.

One particularly painful aspect for Mike is said to be that Zara and their children knew Phil primarily during the years in which his health was affected by Parkinson’s.

“What does choke Mike up is that his dad’s been sick for so long, Zara and his kids have never seen him in his prime,” the source claimed, adding that Phil had always been Mike’s “hero.”

The former England rugby star has reportedly found comfort in hearing from people who remember his father before his illness, particularly those connected with Phil’s own years in rugby.

Otley Rugby Club, where Phil played and served as captain during the 1972-73 period, recently observed a minute’s silence in his memory, with Mike publicly thanking the club for the touching gesture.

Zara is now said to be providing crucial support at home as her husband processes his loss, while Mike also looks towards continuing his efforts to raise awareness about Parkinson’s and the challenges faced by people with advanced forms of the disease.

There is particular concern for Mike’s mother, who worked as a social worker and had reportedly been Phil’s primary caregiver for more than 20 years. The source claimed Mike and his brother Ian are now “keeping a close eye on her” as she adjusts to a dramatically different life.

“She’s been Phil’s caregiver for over 20 years so she has a whole new existence to adapt to,” the insider said.
