Duchess Sophie Steals Spotlight in Floral Pink as Edward Lands Special Role at Royal Wedding
Duchess Sophie brought a lively touch of royal elegance to Ella Mountbatten’s wedding, turning heads in a flowing floral pink dress as she joined Prince Edward for the joyful family celebration in West Sussex.
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were among around 200 guests who gathered to watch Ella, daughter of Lord Ivar Mountbatten, marry insurance broker Fergus Wright.
The celebrations began with a ceremony at St Luke’s Church in Milland, where Edward was handed a particularly meaningful responsibility as he signed the marriage register.
Sophie, meanwhile, stood out in a soft pink dress decorated with delicate floral patterns featuring shades of red, orange, black and cream.
Its flowing silhouette and understated styling gave the Duchess an elegant appearance suitable for the family occasion, while offering a colourful contrast to more traditional formal royal looks.
Sophie was pictured smiling during the celebrations, appearing relaxed as she joined other guests in marking the newlyweds’ big day.
Her warm appearance complemented the modern atmosphere of the wedding, which saw Ella incorporate her own ideas while retaining many familiar elements of a traditional ceremony.
The bride wore a bespoke ivory silk-satin Ella May London gown featuring a corseted bodice, full skirt and sweeping train as she exchanged vows with Fergus.
Ella later revealed how much it meant to have so many important people gathered together for the occasion. “It was really lovely. I had all my godparents there. It meant a lot to me,” she told the Daily Mail.
She also departed from traditional wedding convention by delivering her own speech at the reception, taking on a role historically more commonly associated with the father of the bride, groom and best man.
Explaining her decision, Ella said: “When else are you going to get all your favourite people in one place to say thanks for all the effort that everyone put in?”
Ella and Fergus’ relationship began unexpectedly during the pandemic when they were housemates in Clapham, south London, following their university years.
Ella had studied at Bristol while Fergus attended Edinburgh, and her planned move to New York for a Wall Street job was cancelled as the pandemic disrupted international travel and working arrangements.
During her wedding speech, Ella also paid tribute to her family, including her parents Lord Ivar Mountbatten and events manager Penny. The former couple separated in 2010 and divorced the following year after 17 years of marriage but have remained close friends.
With Edward carrying out the special duty of signing the register and Sophie bringing colour and warmth to the celebrations, the Edinburghs played a memorable part in Ella and Fergus’ big day. Yet Sophie’s cheerful floral look ensured she attracted plenty of attention of her own while celebrating alongside the wider Mountbatten family.
