Princess Kate Reveals the Royal Duty She Still Finds Really Hard Despite Growing Confidence
Princess Kate may appear increasingly confident during major royal engagements but the future Queen has previously admitted there is one surprisingly part of public life that she continues to find really hard.
The Princess of Wales has gradually returned to a fuller programme of public duties following her cancer treatment, once again attending receptions, community visits and major royal occasions where she regularly interacts with large numbers of people.
Yet crowded receptions reportedly present a particular challenge for Catherine because of her naturally soft voice, especially when dozens of conversations are taking place around her at the same time.
According to Palace insiders cited by Radar, Kate is not someone who naturally projects her voice across a noisy room, meaning busy receptions can require considerably more effort than her composed public appearances might suggest.
The difficulty is reportedly compounded by Catherine’s approach to meeting members of the public. Rather than exchanging a few quick words before moving on, she prefers to properly listen to the person standing in front of her.
“That can make these events harder because Catherine’s instinct is to stop, listen properly and give people her full attention rather than exchange a few words and immediately move along,” an insider told the outlet.
That habit can apparently create challenges for those responsible for keeping tightly scheduled royal engagements running on time, particularly when large numbers of guests are waiting for an opportunity to speak with the Princess.
The source said it has even become something of a “running joke” behind the scenes because Kate is regularly encouraged to speak more loudly and sometimes spends considerably longer speaking with individual guests than originally scheduled.
Although Catherine has reportedly received training designed to prepare her for public appearances, the insider claimed that her increasing confidence has not fundamentally changed her naturally reserved communication style.
“She has had training in public appearances and how to deal with them, but despite her apparent growing confidence she still prefers to be quiet rather than loud,” the source explained.
Kate herself previously acknowledged the challenge during a busy Buckingham Palace reception in 2025, giving guests an unusually candid glimpse of something she finds difficult despite years of experience carrying out royal engagements.
“I find these environments are really hard,” Catherine admitted while speaking inside the Palace. “I’ve also got a very soft voice, so I always get told, ‘Speak up a bit louder!’”
Her comments showed that even after years as a senior member of the Royal Family, some elements of highly public royal life do not necessarily come naturally — particularly the requirement to make herself heard inside crowded rooms.
Rather than preventing her from engaging with people, however, Kate’s quieter approach reportedly means conversations can sometimes last longer. Her own admission offers a revealing glimpse behind the polished appearances, showing that growing royal confidence has not completely erased the personal challenges she encounters along the way.
