Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Make Feelings Clear Over King Charles Private Citizen Label
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly made their feelings clear over the description of them as effectively private citizens after King Charles’ office issued a significant clarification concerning their royal status following their return to Britain.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to prefer being described as “public figures,” language they believe more accurately reflects their unusual position as internationally recognised individuals who remain personally connected to the royal family.
The debate emerged after the Palace reiterated that Harry and Meghan remain non-working members of the royal family and do not undertake official representative duties on behalf of the sovereign despite their extended stay in Britain.
According to the Daily Mail, the Sussexes would prefer the term “public figures” because it would acknowledge that, “on a personal level, they remained members of the Royal Family, despite no longer receiving public funding.”
The distinction appears important to Harry and Meghan because stepping away from working royal responsibilities did not end their personal family relationships with Charles, Prince William or other relatives, even though their institutional roles dramatically changed.
The Palace’s earlier clarification described their position as being “akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests,” making clear that their professional and philanthropic activities should not be interpreted as official royal engagements.
Harry and Meghan’s reported preference for “public figures” does not appear to challenge the fact that they are no longer working royals. Instead, it focuses on how their current public and personal position should be characterised.
Another point of disagreement has emerged over how much advance warning the Sussexes received before the Palace clarification was released, with Harry and Meghan’s spokesperson publicly expressing surprise about the communication process.
The spokesperson said the couple were “a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance,” a remark that quickly fuelled speculation about continuing communication difficulties between the Sussex household and Buckingham Palace.
However, the Palace reportedly disputed suggestions that Harry and Meghan had received no warning at all, maintaining that the couple had been informed before the clarification became public.
According to the Palace position, the Sussexes were notified that a communication was coming, although the specific contents of the letter were reportedly not disclosed to them beforehand, potentially explaining the differing accounts from both sides.
The dispute comes as Harry and Meghan establish a new routine in Britain with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet while preparing to pursue charitable, commercial and other public-facing projects independently from the working monarchy.
Their increased visibility has already generated speculation about whether their British activities could blur the distinction between private projects and official royal duties, which appears to have contributed to the Palace’s decision to restate the existing boundaries.
For now, Harry and Meghan remain outside the working monarchy and there is no indication they are seeking restoration of their former roles. But their reported preference for “public figures” shows they want a distinction maintained between being private individuals institutionally and remaining prominent members of the King’s family personally.
