Prince Harry and Meghan Make Unexpected Decision Over Charles Spencer’s Meaningful Offer
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made a surprising decision over a heartfelt offer from Princess Diana’s brother Charles Spencer as speculation continues surrounding the Sussexes search for a new home in Britain.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly considering their family’s longer-term future in the UK, particularly as Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet become more settled in the country. Their plans have fuelled speculation about where the family could eventually establish a permanent British base.
According to Naughty But Nice, Charles Spencer offered his nephew and Meghan the possibility of using The Falconry, a historic 17th-century lodge located on the Spencer family’s Althorp Estate in Northamptonshire.
The gesture would carry considerable emotional significance for Harry. Althorp was Princess Diana’s childhood home and remains closely connected to her memory, with the late Princess of Wales buried on an island within the estate following her death in 1997.
Despite those deeply personal connections, Harry and Meghan reportedly thanked Spencer for his generous offer but ultimately decided the property would not meet their requirements as they consider their future arrangements in Britain.
Royal commentator Rob Shuter claimed Harry was particularly touched by his uncle’s gesture because of his emotional attachment to Althorp. “Harry was genuinely moved because Althorp will always be sacred ground to him,” Shuter said.
However, a source cited by Shuter claimed Meghan viewed the practicalities differently. “But Meghan took one look at the reality and knew it wouldn’t work. Too remote, too far from London and, frankly, not nearly grand enough.”
The couple are reportedly searching for a property that would provide considerably more than simply a private countryside retreat. Their requirements are said to include privacy and security while also allowing convenient access to London for their professional and personal commitments.
“Meghan isn’t moving back to Britain to hide away in an old lodge in Northamptonshire,” an insider claimed, suggesting the Duchess has a clear idea of what the family’s potential British home should provide.
“She wants privacy, history and security — but she also expects serious luxury, substantial space and easy access to London. This wasn’t even close,” the source added about why The Falconry reportedly failed to meet their expectations.
The decision could have been particularly difficult for Harry given his connection to the Spencer family and Althorp. The estate represents an important part of his mother’s history and could have offered the Duke an opportunity to live close to a place carrying powerful childhood memories.
Nevertheless, the Sussexes appear to be balancing emotional considerations with the practical requirements of their family. With Archie and Lilibet reportedly becoming part of their plans for a greater presence in Britain, location, space and security could play major roles in choosing a suitable home.
One insider described the difference between Harry and Meghan’s reactions in particularly striking terms, claiming: “Harry’s heart loved the idea; Meghan’s head killed it.” The source added: “He saw family and memories. She saw isolation and compromise.”
While the claims have not been confirmed by Harry, Meghan or Charles Spencer, the reported decision suggests the Sussexes may have bigger ambitions for their British base. Even the emotional pull of Princess Diana’s childhood estate was apparently not enough to outweigh their requirements for their next home.
