King Charles Breaks Silence on Prince Harry and Meghan’s Royal Status With Strong Sandringham Message
King Charles has made his position on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal future unmistakably clear following their return to UK, confirming that the agreement which ended their lives as working royals remains firmly in place.
The clarification came in a letter from the King’s Lord Chamberlain to “senior stakeholders,” including representatives across government, the military and Lord Lieutenancies, setting out the Sussexes’ position following renewed speculation about their status.
Harry and Meghan’s extended UK return had raised questions over whether the couple might eventually secure some form of “half-in, half-out” arrangement, allowing them to undertake selected royal-style engagements while maintaining their financial and professional independence.
However, the latest Palace message appears to shut the door on such a formal arrangement. Charles has made clear that the Sandringham agreement reached under Queen Elizabeth II in 2020 continues to determine Harry and Meghan’s position.
“It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign,” the letter stated, confirming they “are no longer working Members of The Royal Family.”
The Palace stressed that Harry and Meghan’s position remains separate from the state and royal responsibilities carried out by working members of the family, while acknowledging the greater personal freedom their private status provides.
“This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family,” the letter continued, allows the Sussexes “personal latitude” regarding their financial independence and their desired level of privacy.
Most significantly, the message explicitly confirmed: “It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” removing uncertainty over whether their UK return had triggered a reconsideration of the 2020 arrangement.
The letter also addressed Harry and Meghan’s royal styles. “Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used,” it stated, reinforcing the boundaries established after they stepped away from official duties.
The Palace further clarified the position surrounding Harry and Meghan’s charitable activities as they seek to rebuild links with organisations in Britain and potentially become more visible through public-facing causes.
“The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” the message explained, making clear such appearances should not be interpreted as official engagements representing Charles or the monarchy.
“In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests,” the Palace added. Royal commentator Rebecca English also highlighted the significant clarification as speculation surrounding the Sussexes’ future continued.
The statement does not prevent Harry and Meghan from pursuing charities, businesses or other projects in Britain. Instead, it draws a clear distinction between their personal activities and the official duties performed by William, Kate and other working royals.
Harry and Meghan’s return may still provide opportunities for private reconciliation with Charles and other relatives, but it has not changed their institutional relationship with the monarchy. The King’s message confirms that the Sandringham settlement remains intact, effectively closing the door for now on speculation about a formal Sussex return to royal duties.
