Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are facing an unexpected delay in establishing their permanent British home after making their rapid return to the UK, with their search for the right property potentially taking more than a year.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are determined to build their new lives as private citizens without relying on financial assistance from King Charles, but several practical challenges have emerged since their return with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
The children have already begun school, while Harry’s unresolved concerns surrounding police protection continue to hang over the family. Finding a permanent residence has now reportedly become another major issue requiring considerable time and planning.
Despite previous reports suggesting the Sussexes had already secured a Cotswolds home, Daily Mail journalist Alison Boshoff reports that local estate agents and landowners remain intensely curious about where the family is currently staying and where they might eventually buy.
According to a friend of Harry, the Sussex family is temporarily living at a property connected to one of their friends while the Duke and Duchess continue searching for a suitable permanent home.
“They are staying in a property on the estate of a friend,” the source explained. However, Harry reportedly believes their particular requirements make finding a property that is immediately ready for the family extremely unlikely.
The friend suggested the Sussexes could face a lengthy wait before moving into their own residence. “He thinks it may be 12 to 18 months before they’re into a new place,” the source claimed.
Even that estimate could prove optimistic depending on when they complete a purchase and how much work the chosen property requires. The source acknowledged that their permanent move could ultimately take even longer than initially anticipated.
Meanwhile, rumours have suggested Meghan remains reluctant about settling permanently in Britain and could divide her time between the UK and United States because of professional commitments. Harry’s friend, however, strongly rejected suggestions she is hesitant about the move.
According to the source, Meghan is “100 per cent all-in” and could become particularly involved in the house-hunting and renovation process, turning the lengthy search into a major personal project as the family establishes its new British base.
The couple are reportedly looking for a historic property with substantial land, requirements that significantly reduce the number of suitable homes available. Renovating such a residence could also prove complicated and time-consuming once a purchase is eventually completed.
Their search is expected to require a budget exceeding £8 million, which the source claims the Sussexes can afford. Several property agents have reportedly already been engaged and have spent around a month searching for potential options.
“They have engaged a number of agents who have been looking for them for the past month or so,” the friend said, adding that widespread speculation has emerged about which properties Harry and Meghan may be considering.
For now, the Sussexes appear prepared to remain at their temporary accommodation while waiting for the right opportunity. With the size, land and historic character they reportedly want rarely becoming available, Harry and Meghan’s rushed UK return may be followed by a much slower journey towards finding their permanent family home.
