Prince Harry Urged To Step Down From Invictus Games After King Charles Pressure Claim

Prince Harry has been urged to consider stepping down from the Invictus Games after royal commentators raised concerns that his team may be using public pressure to encourage King Charles to appear at the 2027 Birmingham event.

The Duke of Sussex remains closely associated with the sporting competition he founded, and preparations are already underway for its return to Britain. However, fresh criticism has emerged after reports suggested Harry wants his father to attend the Games.

The issue was discussed on Palace Confidential, where royal commentators Richard Eden and Richard Kay examined claims surrounding the reported invitation to the King.

The debate followed a column by journalist Amanda Platell, who argued that King Charles should resist pressure to accept Harry’s invitation if details of the request had deliberately been made public.

Eden went further by suggesting that the invitation may have been deliberately presented to the media by Harry’s public relations team. He argued that public discussion could create additional pressure on the monarch to attend an event that is still many months away.

The commentator pointed to previous claims from royal journalist Charlotte Griffiths, who has spoken about receiving favourable stories from advisers connected to the Sussexes. Eden appeared to view that history as relevant to the latest speculation surrounding the Birmingham Games.

Eden said that pressure had repeatedly been placed on King Charles and Queen Camilla through public speculation surrounding the Sussexes. He referenced the period before Harry and Meghan’s recent UK visit, when reports focused heavily on security arrangements and whether their children would accompany them.

According to Eden, an invitation for a senior royal to attend such an important event would traditionally be handled privately rather than becoming the subject of prolonged media discussion. He argued that publicly discussing the request could make the situation unnecessarily uncomfortable for the King.

The royal commentator also defended Platell’s position, saying he understood her concern that accepting the invitation under those circumstances could make it appear as though the monarch had been pressured into attending.

Eden then made his most striking suggestion, arguing that Harry should consider stepping away from the Invictus Games altogether. In his view, removing the personal controversy surrounding the Duke could allow the event to receive greater attention for its original purpose.

Richard Kay, another veteran royal correspondent, broadly agreed that it was unusual for such a potential royal engagement to become public so far ahead of time. He noted that royal schedules are generally organised through established planning processes rather than being announced this early.

Kay suggested that Harry could be attempting to encourage his father to make a decision before the Palace has fully planned the King’s diary. He also acknowledged that Harry may believe some members of his father’s staff are opposed to his involvement.

Despite the controversy, Kay believes King Charles could genuinely want to attend the Birmingham Games because of the Royal Family’s long-standing relationship with the armed forces and military veterans.

The Invictus Games remain one of Prince Harry’s most significant achievements since leaving royal duties, having created an international platform for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans.

Kay acknowledged that the Games are undoubtedly an important part of Harry’s legacy. However, he cautioned that using the event primarily to advance the Duke’s personal relationship with the King could potentially create resentment among some royal observers.

The Birmingham Games are scheduled to take place from July 10 to 17, 2027, marking the competition’s return to the United Kingdom for the first time since the inaugural Games were held in London in 2014.

Whether King Charles ultimately attends remains uncertain, and there is currently no indication that Harry intends to step away from the organisation he founded. For now, the controversy highlights the delicate balance between Harry’s personal hopes for reconciliation and the independent purpose of the Invictus Games.
