King Charles Makes Historic Royal Appointment But Prince William Will Not Inherit the Five Centuries Old Role

King Charles has approved a new appointment to a prestigious royal linked position dating back nearly five centuries but the historic role will not automatically pass to Prince William when he becomes monarch.

The King has maintained a tradition established during the reign of Henry VIII by approving a new Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Oxford. The position was created in 1541, making it around 485 years old.

Professor Laura Swift has been appointed to the distinguished academic post at Christ Church, succeeding Professor Gregory Hutchinson.

The appointment comes as Charles continues his Caribbean tour, which has included engagements in Guyana. Despite his responsibilities as monarch, the King continues to hold a number of historic academic and ceremonial connections.

The Regius Professorship of Greek is one of the university’s longstanding positions, with its origins linked to Henry VIII. Its royal connection has continued across generations, preserving an unusual link between the monarchy and the academic world.

Professor Swift brings considerable experience in the study of ancient Greek literature. Her specialist interests include Greek tragedy, lyric poetry and the relationship between different forms of ancient choral writing.

She is currently a Professor of Greek at the University of Oxford, as well as a Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Magdalen College. Her academic career has focused on examining ancient texts and exploring how Greek literature developed across different forms and traditions.

Her research has also included work on fragmentary ancient writings, helping to improve understanding of literary works that have survived only in incomplete form.

Professor Swift’s achievements have earned her recognition in the academic community. Among her accolades are the Hellenic Foundation Thesis Prize and a Philip Leverhulme Prize.

Her appointment represents the continuation of a position that has survived for centuries, retaining its connection to the Crown long after the reign of its founder.

Although Prince William is the King’s heir and will eventually inherit the throne, historic appointments and royal-linked responsibilities do not all automatically become part of his future role. The Regius Professorship remains a distinct academic position with its own appointment process.

The development also highlights the monarchy’s longstanding relationship with Britain’s universities and academic institutions. The Crown has maintained a presence in certain prestigious positions since the Tudor period.

For Charles, approving the appointment is another example of the traditional responsibilities attached to the monarchy. For Professor Swift, it marks a significant milestone in an already distinguished academic career.

The nearly 485-year-old position will now enter a new chapter under her leadership, continuing a tradition that began during Henry VIII’s reign.
