Prince Harry Urged to Hold Private Talks With King Charles Over Major Family Concern
Prince Harry has been told he is entitled to sit down privately with King Charles and raise his concerns as the Duke navigates life in UK with Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet without taxpayer-funded protection.
Harry surprised royal watchers with his decision to return to the United Kingdom with his family, beginning a significant new chapter after spending years primarily based in the United States following his departure from senior royal duties.
However, one of the biggest issues surrounding the Sussexes’ return remains security. Harry has not been granted the taxpayer-funded protection he has sought, raising questions about how the family will manage their safety during an extended stay in Britain.
Royal expert Jennie Bond believes the Duke should be able to discuss those concerns directly with his father away from public scrutiny, particularly as Harry continues seeking answers about the security arrangements surrounding his family.
Speaking to the Mirror, Bond acknowledged that the Sussexes remaining in Britain without taxpayer-funded protection could potentially weaken public perceptions of Harry’s argument that such security is necessary for his family.
“I suppose the problem is that the longer he and his family stay here with no taxpayer-funded security, the weaker his case may seem,” she said, adding that members of the public are likely to notice the situation.
However, Bond warned that circumstances could change immediately if Harry, Meghan or their children were targeted, arguing that the Duke’s high public profile and previous military background mean his potential risk level should not simply be dismissed.
“Things could change in an instant if Harry or his family were targeted,” Bond explained. “And there’s no denying that his risk level — given his high profile and military background — must be significant.”
The commentator also raised the question of whether Harry should personally finance his security given the Sussexes’ ability to maintain an expensive lifestyle, an argument that has frequently surrounded discussions about the Duke’s protection in Britain.
Nevertheless, Bond said she personally believes Harry “does deserve a moderate level of taxpayer-funded security,” suggesting there could potentially be a compromise rather than the issue remaining an all-or-nothing dispute.
She also floated the possibility of Harry or Charles making some form of financial contribution towards the cost, although this was Bond’s suggestion rather than confirmation of any arrangement currently being considered by officials.
“I also think there must be some way in which either he or the King could contribute to the public purse,” Bond said, questioning whether a practical financial solution could eventually be found to help resolve the dispute.
Bond further argued that Harry is “entitled” to speak privately with his father about the issue and expressed hope that the Duke will soon receive answers, particularly now that his family is spending an extended period in Britain.
Any conversation with Charles would not itself determine Harry’s official security arrangements, but private father-and-son discussions could allow the Duke to explain his concerns as their relationship reportedly moves towards a more positive phase.
In the meantime, Bond advised Harry and Meghan to maintain a low profile. With Archie and Lilibet now part of the Sussexes’ renewed British life, security remains one of Harry’s most pressing concerns and an issue he may increasingly want to discuss directly with the King.
