Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were left disappointed by King Charles decision to formally clarify their royal status, with sources claiming the couple underestimated Prince William’s influence as they began settling into their new routine in Britain.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to pursue charitable and commercial activities independently following their return, operating as private individuals rather than carrying out official engagements on behalf of the King or the royal family.
Nevertheless, their extended stay in Britain triggered considerable speculation about whether closer proximity to Charles and other relatives could eventually pave the way for some form of renewed relationship with the working monarchy.
The attention reportedly became significant enough for Charles to clarify the situation. A letter issued through the Lord Chamberlain at the King’s direction confirmed that the arrangements established when Harry and Meghan stepped away from official royal duties remain unchanged.
According to a source cited by Rob Shuter, the Sussex team received the letter “shortly before the rest of the world,” meaning Harry and Meghan were informed of the clarification before it became public.
“Their team received the message,” the royal insider claimed. “There was no negotiation. They were informed,” suggesting the communication was presented as a clarification of their existing status rather than something open for discussion.
The source then made a more striking claim about William’s influence, adding: “That was the moment they realised they had underestimated William’s power,” as speculation continues about the Prince of Wales’ role behind the scenes.
Sources have alleged that William pushed for clear boundaries to be established following his brother’s return, particularly as questions emerged about how Harry and Meghan’s charitable appearances and growing public profile in Britain should be interpreted.
Charles reportedly remains interested in improving his personal relationship with Harry and spending more time with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, but the latest Palace position keeps those family matters separate from the Sussexes’ institutional royal status.
Harry and Meghan were reportedly disappointed because they had hoped improved family relations might allow them to develop an “informal place around the family,” even without formally returning as working members of the monarchy.
The Palace clarification, however, appears to have significantly limited expectations surrounding such an arrangement. Harry and Meghan remain free to pursue their own charitable, commercial and public-facing projects, but those activities do not represent the sovereign.

The source added another warning about William’s growing influence, claiming: “William can close doors faster than they expected.” There is, however, no official confirmation that William personally demanded the letter or dictated Charles’ decision.
For now, Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain continues, but their royal position remains unchanged. While personal relationships with Charles and other relatives could still evolve privately, the latest clarification makes clear that rebuilding family connections does not automatically provide a route back into the working monarchy.
