King Charles Breaks Palace Tradition as Prince William and Princess Kate Face Major Housing Decision
King Charles has broken a long-standing Palace tradition as Prince William and Princess Kate face a major decision about where they will live when William eventually becomes King. The discussion has intensified following fresh reports about the future of the Wales family’s royal residences.
Prince William and Princess Kate settled into Forest Lodge in Windsor in 2025 after leaving Adelaide Cottage. The spacious eight-bedroom property has provided the couple and their three children with greater privacy while remaining close to Windsor Castle.
The move was widely viewed as an important step in balancing royal responsibilities with family life. Forest Lodge has since become the Wales family’s primary home, offering a quieter environment for Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Despite living in Windsor, William and Kate have continued to maintain Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace as their official London residence. The property remains an important base for engagements carried out in the capital.
However, royal insiders now believe both Forest Lodge and Kensington Palace may not remain the couple’s long-term homes. Attention has turned to where the Prince and Princess of Wales could choose to live after William succeeds to the throne.
The debate follows King Charles’ own decision to depart from royal tradition. Instead of moving permanently into Buckingham Palace after becoming monarch, Charles confirmed in 2025 that he intends to continue living at Clarence House.
Although Buckingham Palace remains the official headquarters of the British monarchy, the King has chosen to keep Clarence House as his primary residence. Extensive refurbishment work at Buckingham Palace has continued while official business is still conducted there.
King Charles’ decision has prompted fresh discussion about whether future monarchs are expected to make Buckingham Palace their permanent home. Some royal experts believe the long-standing tradition may now be changing.
Writing for the MailOnline, royal author Christopher Wilson said a former courtier suggested the old expectation had effectively come to an end. According to Wilson, the source remarked that “the spell is broken.”
The comment reflects growing belief that future monarchs may enjoy greater flexibility when deciding where to live. Rather than automatically moving into Buckingham Palace, they could choose a residence that better suits their personal and family needs.
That possibility has naturally led to questions about Prince William and Princess Kate’s future plans. If William becomes King, he may decide to follow his father’s example by continuing to live outside Buckingham Palace.
At the same time, Buckingham Palace is expected to remain the administrative heart of the monarchy regardless of where the sovereign resides. The historic building will continue hosting state occasions, official ceremonies, and major royal events.
Neither Kensington Palace nor Buckingham Palace has indicated what William and Kate’s future housing plans might be. Any decision is likely to depend on the couple’s priorities, family circumstances, and the practical demands of the monarchy at the time.
For now, Prince William and Princess Kate appear settled at Forest Lodge while continuing to use Kensington Palace for official duties. Whether they eventually follow King Charles in breaking with royal tradition or establish a different royal base remains one of the many questions surrounding the future of the monarchy.
