Princess Kate Makes Strategic Move to Support King Charles as Absence at Aberfan Anniversary Raises Questions

Princess Kate reportedly chose to stay away from the 60th anniversary commemorations of the Aberfan disaster to keep the focus on King Charles and Prince William, according to a report claiming the decision reflected careful consideration rather than a purely health-related absence.
The Princess of Wales, who announced in 2025 that she was in remission following cancer treatment, was absent as Charles, Queen Camilla and William attended commemorations in Wales marking the tragedy’s 60th anniversary.
Her absence prompted questions about why she did not join the royal party at the deeply emotional event, which remembered the 144 people who died when a coal-waste tip collapsed onto Pantglas Junior School and nearby homes in 1966.
A report in New Idea, citing an unnamed insider, suggested Kate understood that her presence could draw attention away from the anniversary’s central purpose.
According to the source, the Princess is aware of the attention she attracts when appearing alongside other senior royals and may have felt that this particular occasion should remain focused on the King and the community.
The insider claimed that Charles and Camilla appreciated Kate’s sensitivity towards the event and its significance for the people of Aberfan.
“Kate knows when to bow out and when not to,” the source reportedly said.
“The 60th anniversary of that terrible day is no trifle and not every Wales-related engagement needs both of them present – especially one focused on the King and the direct connection William already has with the community.”
William’s presence was particularly relevant because of his role as Prince of Wales, while Charles attended to honour those who lost their lives and the community that continues to remember them.
However, the report’s explanation of Kate’s absence has not been independently confirmed, and Kensington Palace has not publicly stated that she stayed away to avoid attracting attention.
The report also raised the possibility that health considerations could have played a part in Kate’s decision, given her recent cancer treatment and the approaching winter season.
The unnamed source suggested that the colder months could lead the Princess to take additional precautions against seasonal illnesses.
“The cold and flu season came through early this year in the UK,” the insider reportedly said, adding that William might appear at some engagements without his wife during the winter.
There has been no official confirmation that Kate’s absence from the Aberfan commemorations was linked to a weakened immune system or a specific medical concern.
The Princess has gradually returned to public duties following treatment, but details of her current health arrangements remain private.
Her absence should therefore not be taken as evidence of a new health problem, nor can the reported strategic explanation be treated as established fact.
The Aberfan anniversary was a solemn occasion centred on remembrance, with Charles and William joining members of the community to honour the victims and survivors.
For now, the reason Kate did not attend remains unconfirmed, while the claims that she deliberately stepped aside to keep attention on the King and William come from an unnamed source rather than an official Palace statement.
