Prince William Rushes To Wales As Royal Family Mourns Loss Of Trusted Figure
Prince William stepped forward to support senior members of the royal family during an emotional moment as they gathered to honour a long time royal confidante whose passing left many deeply saddened.
The Prince of Wales travelled to Brecon in Wales on Wednesday morning to attend a special service of thanksgiving remembering Dame Elizabeth Shân Legge Bourke, a respected figure who maintained strong ties with several senior royals.
William was joined by his aunt Princess Anne and Sophie Duchess of Edinburgh as the royal trio gathered alongside family members and close friends to pay their respects.
The ceremony took place just three months after Dame Shan passed away in December 2025. Her death at the age of 82 left her family devastated and marked the loss of a devoted public servant and trusted royal companion.
The service was held in Brecon and began at midday, focusing on celebrating the life and achievements of the respected Powys landowner who had also served as Lord Lieutenant of Powys for many years.
Dame Shan held a special place within the royal circle. She served as a lady in waiting to Princess Anne and was also known to have a close relationship with Queen Camilla.
Despite the close connection, Queen Camilla did not attend the memorial service. Her absence sparked speculation but it is believed the sombre tone of the occasion may have influenced the decision.
Prince William, Princess Anne and Sophie arrived by helicopter from Christ College Brecon before being escorted to the service by police, highlighting the importance of the gathering and the security measures surrounding royal movements.
Dame Shan’s life was defined by her dedication to public service and loyalty to the Crown. Her commitment was formally recognised when she was appointed a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order in 1988.
She later received further recognition in 2015 when she was elevated to Dame Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, one of the honours personally awarded by the monarch for distinguished service.
Her personal ties with the royal family extended even deeper through her daughter Tiggy Pettifer, who once served as the nanny to both Prince William and Prince Harry during their childhood.
Dame Shan’s husband, Captain William Legge Bourke, had also been closely connected to the monarchy. He previously served as an equerry in the royal household before his death in 2009.
Following her passing, the Legge Bourke family shared touching tributes online, describing their mother as an inspiration whose kindness and dedication shaped both their family and the wider community.
They expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying they missed her greatly while also taking pride in the remarkable legacy she left through her public service and commitment to others.
The memorial gathering served as a reminder of the deep personal relationships that exist behind the formal image of the monarchy, showing how members of the royal family continue to support one another during difficult times.
