Princess Kate Claims Key Royal Position With Prince William’s Strong Backing

Princess Kate has made one of the monarchy’s most significant positions firmly her own with Prince William’s support helping her navigate the enormous expectations surrounding a title once held by his late mother, Princess Diana.

When Catherine became Princess of Wales, comparisons with Diana were inevitable. The late Princess transformed expectations surrounding royal life through her personal approach to engagements, particularly her willingness to interact more naturally with members of the public.

Kate has drawn inspiration from her late mother-in-law while gradually developing a distinctive approach to her own responsibilities, according to royal expert Jennie Bond, who closely followed Diana during her years as a working royal.

“To a generation who are now quite used to seeing a Princess of Wales sitting on the floor with a bunch of kids or carrying out an official engagement wearing jeans and trainers, it must be hard to appreciate what a revolution the last Princess of Wales created,” Bond told The Mirror.

The royal commentator explained that Diana helped challenge some of the formality traditionally associated with monarchy, establishing an approach that now makes Catherine’s relaxed interactions during engagements appear considerably more natural to modern audiences.

William has reportedly played an important part in helping his wife understand the unusual demands of royal life. Bond suggested Kate has been guided by her husband through the “extraordinary ways of the royal world” while establishing herself within the institution.

Diana’s influence on William has also indirectly shaped Kate’s journey. Bond noted that the late Princess was open with both William and Harry, allowing her sons to absorb important values and lessons despite losing their mother when they were still young.

However, Bond stressed that Catherine should not simply be viewed as someone following William or copying Diana. She described the Princess as “a strong character in her own right, with a sharp brain and a university degree to prove it.”

Kate’s confidence within the role has developed gradually over many years. Rather than attempting to immediately redefine her position, she has reportedly taken a patient approach while identifying causes where she believes she can make a meaningful contribution.

Bond, who accompanied Diana on numerous royal trips, said she recently experienced “a sense of déjà vu” while watching Catherine during her solo visit to Italy, highlighting similarities in the confidence displayed by the two Princesses of Wales.

Yet the commentator believes Kate has successfully developed her own identity. “She has identified her own areas of interest and expertise and is proving that she is very much her own woman in those fields,” Bond explained.

One of the clearest examples is Catherine’s work surrounding early childhood. The Princess has spent years developing knowledge in the area rather than treating it simply as another cause attached to her royal position.

“I think Catherine has a clear idea of how she wants to do her job,” Bond said, adding that with initiatives such as her Early Years campaign, Kate immerses herself in subjects so she can speak “from a basis of considerable expertise.”

William’s experience and Diana’s example may have helped shape Catherine’s royal journey, but Bond’s assessment suggests the Princess has now moved beyond comparisons. After years of preparation and patient work, Kate appears increasingly comfortable defining for herself what being the modern Princess of Wales should mean.
