Prince William and Prince Harry Face Difficult Choice as Charles Spencer’s Diana Claims Stir Family Tensions
Prince William and Prince Harry could face an increasingly difficult family situation as their uncle Charles Spencer continues to share previously untold stories about Princess Diana and senior members of the Royal Family in his new memoir.
Diana’s brother has revisited some of the family’s most painful history in Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, with several extracts already attracting significant attention before the book’s full release next week.
The excerpts include Spencer’s recollections of conversations and events involving King Charles and Queen Elizabeth II during the difficult period surrounding Diana’s death and funeral in 1997.
Some of Spencer’s claims have already prompted an unusual response from Buckingham Palace, which questioned how grief may have influenced memories of events from nearly three decades ago.
That disagreement potentially leaves William and Harry in an uncomfortable position because Spencer is not simply an author discussing their parents — he is also their maternal uncle and has maintained relationships with both brothers.
Harry, in particular, has been described as close to Spencer. During a previous visit to Britain, the Duke and his family reportedly spent time at his uncle’s Althorp estate.
However, Spencer’s increasingly personal claims concerning Charles could make the relationship more complicated, particularly if further extracts from the memoir bring additional stories involving the King into public discussion.
Neither William nor Harry has indicated that he intends to distance himself from Spencer. Equally, neither brother has publicly supported their uncle’s disputed account of his private conversation with Charles.
Their silence means suggestions that continuing a relationship with Spencer would amount to endorsing his claims remain speculative. Family contact does not necessarily indicate agreement with everything a relative says publicly.
The situation may nevertheless be sensitive for William, who continues to work closely with his father as Prince of Wales, while Harry has been attempting to navigate his own relationship with Charles following years of family disagreements.
Both brothers have continued with their public commitments since the controversy began. William has focused on royal engagements alongside Princess Kate, while Harry has concentrated heavily on his Invictus Games work.
Discussing the dispute on GB News, commentator Cameron Walker Griffiths cited reports suggesting Charles was deeply unhappy about Spencer’s claims and described Buckingham Palace’s response as unusually strong.
He compared the wording to the famous “recollections may vary” response used during an earlier royal controversy, while arguing that the latest Palace statement went considerably further in questioning Spencer’s account.
However, there is currently no evidence that William or Harry is preparing to cut ties with their uncle, nor that Charles has asked either son to do so. Such a decision would remain a private family matter.
For now, both Diana’s sons appear to be following the same approach: staying outside the disagreement. As further revelations from Spencer’s memoir emerge, maintaining that distance may become more difficult, but there is no indication yet that either brother intends to choose between their father and their uncle.
