Duchess Sophie’s Heartbreaking Journey With Lady Louise Revealed as Royal Faced Surgery at Young Age

Duchess Sophie endured a heartbreaking experience as a mother when her daughter Lady Louise Windsor had to undergo surgery because of a rare medical condition.
Prince Edward and Sophie have always been devoted parents to their two children, Lady Louise and James, Earl of Wessex, while supporting their individual journeys.
Recently, King Charles gave special recognition to his niece Louise following her graduation from the University of St Andrews, marking an important milestone in her life.
However, behind her achievements, the young royal experienced medical difficulties during her childhood that required considerable attention from her parents.
Louise was born prematurely through an emergency Caesarean section after Sophie experienced a placental abruption, a serious pregnancy complication. She was also born with esotropia, a form of strabismus in which one or both eyes turn inwards.
The condition was particularly noticeable during her early childhood, leaving Sophie and Edward concerned about their daughter’s developing eyesight.
Sophie previously revealed that Louise’s squint was “quite profound” when she was little and explained that correcting the condition took time.
“You’ve got to make sure one eye doesn’t become more dominant than the other but she’s fine now – her eyesight is perfect,” the Duchess said.
The young royal underwent surgery to address the condition, with her parents remaining closely involved throughout her treatment and recovery.
Optometrist Jess Perri also explained to New Idea that the condition involves more than appearance and can affect a child’s visual development.
“When the eyes aren’t aligned, the brain may start suppressing the image from one eye, which can affect visual development, depth perception and contribute to amblyopia (lazy eye),” she explained.
Perri added that treatment aims to help the developing brain establish healthy vision and learn to use both eyes together.
“The aim isn’t to just ‘straighten the eyes’, but also to give the developing brain the best opportunity to establish good vision and learn to use both eyes together (binocular vision),” she said.
Fortunately, Sophie previously confirmed that Louise’s eyesight had become perfect following treatment, offering reassurance after the family’s difficult experience.
Today, the young royal is moving forward with her education and personal achievements, while her parents continue to support her journey beyond the public spotlight.
