King Charles and Royal Family Alerted to Serious Cyber Threat as Palace Takes Urgent Action
King Charles and other members of the royal family have been alerted to a serious cyber threat as Buckingham Palace prepares to introduce major protective measures designed to strengthen its cybersecurity systems amid growing concerns about potential online attacks.
According to the Mirror, the Palace is preparing to revamp its cybersecurity infrastructure at a time of heightened tensions between the United Kingdom and Russia, with additional resources expected to be directed towards protecting important royal systems from potential threats.
The improvements will reportedly be funded through the Sovereign Grant, the annual funding provided to support the monarch’s official duties and the work of the Royal Household, as well as maintaining and operating occupied royal palaces.
A portion of the annual grant will now be spent on upgrading ageing cybersecurity systems at Buckingham Palace, ensuring the Royal Household has stronger digital protection as cybersecurity becomes an increasingly important concern for major institutions.
Treasury minister Dan Tomlinson confirmed that funding would allow the Royal Household to address several important areas, including maintenance issues that accumulated during a period when finances were constrained because of the pandemic.
“The new level of the grant will ensure that the Royal Household can continue to deal with property maintenance backlogs following some years of constrained funding during the pandemic,” Tomlinson explained while discussing how the money would be used.
However, maintaining royal properties will not be the only priority. Tomlinson confirmed that replacing older systems and strengthening cybersecurity would also form part of the work being supported through the new level of funding.
“It will also allow the Royal Household to replace ageing systems to strengthen cybersecurity and to install energy-efficient heating systems,” the Treasury minister added, outlining some of the improvements planned for the royal estate.
The cybersecurity element is particularly significant given the high-profile nature of the monarchy and the potential disruption that could result from attacks targeting the Royal Household’s online infrastructure or other important digital systems.
The royal family has already experienced the consequences of a cyberattack. In October 2023, the monarchy’s official website was targeted by hackers, resulting in the site becoming unavailable for approximately an hour before normal access was eventually restored.
That previous incident demonstrated that the royal household is not immune from online threats, making the planned modernisation of ageing systems an important protective measure as digital security risks continue to attract attention.
The latest plans come amid increased tensions between Britain and Russia, although the information provided does not establish that Russia is responsible for any specific cyberattack against Buckingham Palace or that a particular attack on the royals is currently imminent.
Instead, the planned investment appears aimed at improving the Royal Household’s overall resilience by replacing ageing technology and strengthening its ability to protect systems against cybersecurity risks while simultaneously addressing other important infrastructure requirements.
