He later served as private secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs before being appointed as Queen Elizabeth II’s ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco. He also served as the non-resident ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania between 2012 and 2015.

Following his diplomatic service, Alderton returned to become King Charles and Queen Camilla’s principal private secretary. Over the years, he established himself as one of the monarch’s closest advisers during periods of significant constitutional and royal change.

Sir Clive has also been mentioned publicly by Prince Harry in his 2023 memoir. In the book, the Duke of Sussex referred to several senior Palace staff members using insect-inspired nicknames, with Alderton widely believed to be the individual described as “the Wasp.”

Prince Harry wrote that “the Wasp was lithe, charming, arrogant, a ball of jazzy energy,” in his description of the senior Palace aide. The reference attracted considerable attention following the publication of the memoir.
