Charles Spencer Makes His Position Clear on Prince William and Prince Harry Rift

Charles Spencer has made his position clear on Prince William and Prince Harry’s long running rift, declaring that he remains on the side of both of his late sister Princess Diana’s sons rather than choosing between his nephews.

The Earl Spencer’s relationship with William and Harry has attracted renewed attention as he prepares to release Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, a memoir containing deeply personal recollections about Diana and the Royal Family.

Despite the tensions separating the two brothers, Spencer has reportedly maintained relationships with both nephews and appears determined not to allow their differences to force him into either camp.

There has often been speculation that Diana’s younger brother is particularly close to Harry, who has visited the Spencer family’s Althorp estate during trips to Britain and has reportedly stayed there on previous occasions.

Those connections have sometimes fuelled suggestions that the Earl may sympathise more strongly with Harry during the Duke’s disagreements with other senior members of the Royal Family.

However, Spencer directly addressed the issue during an interview with the BBC, describing his loyalties in terms that made clear he does not intend to choose between Diana’s two sons.

The Earl said he is on the side of his “deceased sister’s sons,” presenting his relationship with William and Harry as a family responsibility rather than a position within their continuing disagreement.

Spencer also described himself as a “benign figure” in his nephews’ lives, suggesting that he wants to remain supportive without becoming an active participant in the tensions between the brothers.

His comments came while discussing Harry’s previous remarks about the intense media scrutiny experienced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since their relationship became one of the world’s most closely followed royal stories.

Spencer connected that experience to his memories of Diana, saying his sister had been “very, very sensitive” to criticism and recalling witnessing the emotional impact intense public scrutiny had on her.

He said he had seen Diana experience “tears of despair,” arguing that people should consider what lessons could be taken from the pressures she faced during her lifetime.

According to Spencer, it would be “really beholden on people to learn from Diana’s example,” particularly when considering the personal consequences that relentless negative attention can have.

“I’m not here to speak for Harry and Meghan,” Spencer stressed, before adding that for anyone being “destroyed in this way daily,” such treatment could become a “cancerous influence in their life.”

Spencer’s remarks therefore stop short of endorsing Harry over William. Instead, despite his apparent sympathy for the pressures Harry and Meghan have faced, Diana’s brother has publicly positioned himself as an uncle to both princes refusing to let their estrangement determine his relationship with either nephew.
