Prince William Forced to Save Relationship After Princess Kate’s Ultimatum
Prince William was forced to confront the future of his relationship with Princess Kate after she delivered a dramatic ultimatum before their temporary breakup, with Queen Elizabeth later making a crucial intervention that helped bring the couple back together.
New details about the difficult period have emerged in Russell Myers biography, William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, which explores the pivotal year when William and Kate’s long-running relationship came close to ending permanently.
Before their split in 2007, after around four years together, Kate reportedly decided she needed greater clarity about their future. Rather than continuing indefinitely without knowing where the relationship was heading, she confronted William about making a commitment.
“Catherine delivered an ultimatum to William,” Myers writes in a passage from the book, describing a significant change in the dynamic that had previously characterised the couple’s relationship as they faced an uncertain future together.
The author stressed that Kate did not explicitly demand an engagement or even a promise that William would eventually marry her. Instead, she reportedly made it clear that their relationship could not simply continue without greater certainty.
Myers wrote that Kate “did break free from the gentle and arguably submissive persona that had typified her relationship with the future king,” putting William in a position where he had to seriously consider what he wanted.
The couple ultimately separated, but William reportedly struggled deeply with the consequences of their breakup. According to the biography, the future King began questioning whether he had made a major mistake by allowing such an important relationship to end.
Queen Elizabeth II then reportedly became involved. The late monarch is said to have invited her grandson to Sunday lunch, where she assessed his emotional state and offered advice as William considered whether he should attempt to rebuild his relationship with Kate.
According to a source cited in the book, William was more than simply disappointed by the separation. He was reportedly concerned that he had thrown away “the one constant in his life” and was described as being “completely broken.”
“In that moment, the Queen advised her grandson that the only certain path is the one supported by faith. It was all she had to say,” Myers quoted a source as explaining about Elizabeth’s reported intervention.
The late Queen’s guidance reportedly proved important, with William and Kate eventually reconciling during the summer of 2007, only months after their breakup. Their reunion ultimately placed their relationship on a very different path.
Three years after getting back together, William and Kate announced their engagement before marrying at Westminster Abbey in 2011. They have since welcomed three children together: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
According to the biography, Elizabeth had been particularly concerned about the possibility of William and Kate separating permanently after witnessing the consequences surrounding the breakdown of King Charles’ marriage to William’s mother, Princess Diana.
