Prince Harry Receives Major Boost as Amazon Deal Could Rescue Invictus Games From £20m Funding Crisis
Prince Harry has received a potentially major boost for the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham with £20million Amazon deal that could help ease concerns surrounding the funding of the event.
The development comes after uncertainty over financing for the Games, one of Harry’s most important charitable projects, following reports that a major sponsor had decided not to renew its agreement.
According to The Sun, organisers need around £20million to cover the costs associated with staging the international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans.
The reported loss of sponsorship therefore created concerns about how organisers would secure the financial support required before competitors and their families arrive in Birmingham next July.
However, Amazon has now reportedly expressed interest in becoming involved, potentially providing Harry and the Invictus organisation with valuable support as preparations gather pace.
“The deal would be a shot in the arm for Invictus and Harry,” a source said, describing the proposed partnership as an important opportunity for the organisation.
“The Invictus committee are really hoping it gets over the line. Amazon wanted to get involved,” the insider continued, suggesting discussions have progressed positively.
The potential agreement has also attracted attention because Amazon’s Prime Video competes directly with Netflix, the streaming company that has maintained a commercial relationship with Harry and Meghan Markle.
One source suggested the development could indicate Harry and Meghan are becoming increasingly willing to work with different media partners rather than keeping their projects closely associated with Netflix.
“The games are a big undertaking and expensive. And it’s interesting Amazon are Netflix’s big rival,” the insider explained.
“It maybe shows Harry and Meg moving in a different direction with a new partner,” the source added, although there has been no indication that a possible Amazon arrangement would affect the Sussexes’ existing relationship with Netflix.
The Invictus organisation’s work also extends beyond staging the Games, with programmes supporting veterans in areas including employment and rehabilitation, increasing the importance of securing sustainable financial backing.
Meanwhile, Livewire Pictures is believed to be producing coverage connected with the 2027 Birmingham Games, potentially marking its first involvement with Invictus coverage since 2017. The Invictus Foundation, however, has not yet formally announced a broadcast arrangement.
Any Amazon agreement would therefore represent encouraging news for Harry as he concentrates heavily on making Birmingham 2027 a success amid continuing tensions surrounding his relationship with the Royal Family. Until a deal is officially confirmed, the exact financial terms and Amazon’s role remain unclear, but the reported interest could provide Invictus with an important boost at a crucial stage of preparations.
