Prince Harry’s Private Reaction to Charles Spencer’s Explosive Diana Claims Revealed
Prince Harry was reportedly aware of the explosive claims contained in his uncle Charles Spencer’s new Princess Diana memoir before they became public, meaning the controversial revelations about his mother’s funeral apparently did not come as a surprise.
Harry was only 12 when Diana died following a car crash in Paris in August 1997, leaving him at the centre of extraordinary events and decisions that unfolded while he and Prince William were grieving.
Charles Spencer’s forthcoming book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, now promises to reveal his version of some of those behind-the-scenes events, including previously private disagreements surrounding Diana’s funeral and her two sons.
The memoir has already generated considerable attention because Buckingham Palace reportedly did not receive an advance copy, while extracts have revived discussion of Diana’s troubled marriage and divorce from the then-Prince Charles.
According to Page Six, however, Harry was not blindsided by his uncle’s account. An insider claimed the Duke of Sussex already knew what Spencer intended to reveal before the book’s public announcement.
“Harry knew what was in the book – it didn’t come as a shock,” the source said, suggesting the Duke had been given some knowledge of the memoir’s contents before its publication.
The report also claims Harry and Spencer discussed the book when the Sussexes were in Britain in July, although the precise details of their alleged conversation have not been publicly disclosed.
Spencer has maintained relationships with both Harry and William despite the continuing estrangement between the brothers, and has long presented himself as protective of Diana’s sons following his sister’s death.
That protectiveness was famously expressed during Diana’s funeral, when Spencer publicly pledged that her “blood family” would help continue the loving way she had been raising William and Harry.
His new book returns to that painful period and includes an extraordinary account of an alleged disagreement with the then-Prince Charles over whether the young princes should walk behind their mother’s coffin.
Spencer claims Charles was in a “stream of anger” during their discussion about the funeral procession. He then alleges his former brother-in-law made an even more startling remark concerning Diana’s legacy after her death.
“‘Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough!’” Spencer claims Charles told him. The allegation represents the Earl’s recollection of a private conversation nearly three decades ago and has not been independently verified.
Buckingham Palace has already challenged Spencer’s broader recollection, suggesting that profound grief can “cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory,” while maintaining its general principle of not commenting on books.
Harry has not publicly endorsed Spencer’s version of the alleged conversation or personally confirmed the Page Six report. But if the insider’s account is accurate, the Duke had already been prepared for the revelations now reopening one of the most painful chapters of his childhood — rather than discovering his uncle’s claims alongside the rest of the world.
