UK Goverment Breaks Silence On Prince Harry And Meghan Markle’s Return To Britain
The UK Government has responded to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to return to Britain with their children, offering a brief message after questions about the Sussexes future home and security arrangements.
On August 19, People Magazine reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are preparing to spend an extended period in the United Kingdom with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, marking a major change for the family.
According to the report, Archie and Lilibet are expected to begin school in Britain in September. Harry and Meghan would continue maintaining their Montecito home and their vacation property in Portugal while establishing a private, non-royal base in the UK.
The reported decision immediately raised questions about how the Sussexes would manage their lives between three locations. Their return would also give Harry a more regular presence in the country he left with Meghan after stepping back from royal duties in 2020.
King Charles was reportedly informed about the plans several days before the news became public. The development has attracted considerable attention because Harry’s relationship with the Royal Family remains complicated, particularly his long-running dispute with his brother Prince William.
However, security has emerged as one of the biggest questions surrounding the Sussexes’ reported British return. Harry has repeatedly expressed concerns about the safety of his family and has been involved in a lengthy legal dispute over his security arrangements in the UK.
The Duke lost automatic taxpayer-funded police protection after stepping down as a working royal. He subsequently challenged decisions surrounding his security arrangements, arguing that the level of protection available to him and his family should be reconsidered.
With Meghan and their children potentially spending considerably more time in Britain, questions have naturally arisen over whether the government would change its position or provide additional protection for the family.
Those questions were put to UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Thursday, when reporters asked him about the Sussexes’ reported return and the security issues surrounding the couple.
Burnham appeared unwilling to become directly involved in the discussion, describing the matter as a private issue. His response indicated that the government does not intend to publicly comment on the family’s personal decision to establish a British base.
“Well, this is a private matter,” Burnham said when asked about Harry and Meghan’s plans. His brief response avoided offering any indication of whether the government would reconsider the Duke’s security arrangements.
He continued by making clear that the decision ultimately belongs to Harry and Meghan. “It’s a matter for Harry and for Meghan,” the Prime Minister said, before adding that the government wishes the couple well with the moves they are making.
The comments could disappoint those hoping for an immediate answer about Harry’s security arrangements. The Prime Minister’s response suggests that the government is treating the Sussexes’ reported relocation separately from the ongoing dispute over their protection.
Harry’s security concerns have remained a sensitive issue for years, particularly because he has argued that his family faces different risks when visiting Britain compared with their life in the United States.
The reported move could therefore bring renewed attention to the issue, especially once Archie and Lilibet begin school in the UK. For now, however, the government has offered no indication of a new security arrangement, while Harry and Meghan appear set to maintain their private, non-working royal status.
If the Sussexes establish a longer-term British presence, their security could remain one of the most closely watched aspects of the move. But for now, the government’s message is straightforward: Harry and Meghan’s decision is a private family matter, and officials are wishing them well as they begin this new chapter.
