Prince William Secures King Charles Assurance as Prince Harry’s Return Sparks New Concerns
Prince William has received an important assurance from King Charles as Prince Harry’s return to Britain creates fresh concerns within the Royal Household.
The Duke of Sussex’s reported return has placed him geographically closer to his estranged brother, despite the relationship between the two princes remaining deeply fractured.
Sources have claimed that William was caught off guard by Harry’s decision to return to Britain and remains uneasy about what the Sussexes’ next steps could mean for the Royal Family.
The Prince of Wales is reportedly particularly concerned about the possibility of unexpected developments involving Harry and Meghan Markle once they become more firmly established in the UK.
King Charles, meanwhile, is said to be facing a difficult balancing act between his role as a father and grandfather and his responsibilities as monarch.
As a parent, Charles is reportedly pleased that his younger son is spending more time in Britain, potentially giving him a greater opportunity to see Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
A royal source told Vanity Fair that the King is “genuinely happy” about having Harry closer to home and the possibility of developing a stronger relationship with his grandchildren.
However, Charles is also said to have concerns about the problems Harry’s return could bring back into the spotlight, particularly the Duke’s long-running dispute over security arrangements.
The source claimed that the King is “dreading the prospect of Harry resurrecting his battle with the Home Office over security and the sense that the Harry-and-Meghan soap opera is about to start all over again”.
Harry’s security arrangements in Britain remain an important issue for the Sussexes, with his representatives reportedly already clashing with RAVEC, the body involved in decisions concerning protection for certain individuals.
With a final decision on Harry’s security situation still unclear, the issue could continue to create difficulties as the Sussexes reportedly establish themselves in Britain for an extended period.
Meanwhile, Palace aides have confirmed that discussions surrounding Harry and Meghan’s reported return have taken place, despite denying claims that senior royals held a formal summit to address the matter.
According to the Vanity Fair source, William sought a clear assurance from his father that Harry and Meghan’s constitutional position would remain unchanged despite the family’s reported move back to Britain.
“[William] has sought his father’s assurance there will be no changes to the present situation,” the source said, referring to the Sussexes’ status as non-working members of the Royal Family.
The source added that William is “very concerned” about the couple’s return and remains determined that Harry and Meghan should not resume official royal duties, with the Prince of Wales also reportedly having no plans to meet or reconcile with his younger brother despite King Charles opening the door to a relationship with Harry.
