Prince William May Face New Challenge as Prince Harry’s UK Return Changes Royal Family Dynamics
Prince William and Prince Harry have remained estranged for years, but their relationship could soon become harder to avoid as Harry is expected to spend more time in the UK and potentially appear at family occasions.
The brothers were once famously close, but their relationship has deteriorated significantly since Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior working royals and moved to the United States. Their possible return to Britain has now raised fresh questions about whether greater proximity could eventually create an opportunity for the brothers to repair their fractured relationship.
However, according to British doctor, journalist and author Dr Max Pemberton, the situation may be considerably more complicated than simply putting the brothers in the same room.
Writing in his Daily Mail column, Dr Max suggested that Harry’s increased presence could force the family’s long-running estrangement into the open, potentially changing the situation “quite dramatically.”
Drawing on his experience of observing estranged families, he explained that siblings who had kept each other at “arm’s length for decades” could sometimes find themselves addressing their differences surprisingly quickly once circumstances changed.
Harry’s relationship with King Charles appears to be somewhat different. The monarch has reportedly remained welcoming towards his younger son, which Dr Max suggested could partly be explained by the natural bond between a father and his child.
However, he argued that William’s position is unlikely to change simply because Harry returns to Britain. Dr Max suggested that the Prince of Wales may not be inclined to join celebrations surrounding Harry’s return, pointing to what he considers William’s frustration over the different treatment received by the two brothers.
“His complaint is, to my mind, perfectly justified,” Dr Max wrote, arguing that William has spent years carrying out royal duties while Harry was able to step away before eventually returning to a warm reception.
The doctor also suggested that simply being back in the UK would not be enough for Harry to rebuild his relationship with his older brother. Instead, Harry would have to regain William’s trust, something that could require an acknowledgment of the damage caused by their long-running dispute.
The timing of Harry’s departure from royal life is also likely to remain a major issue. The Sussexes left Britain during a particularly difficult period for the royal family, and the years since have included serious health challenges for both King Charles and Catherine, Princess of Wales.
For Dr Max, reconciliation would require more than time or physical proximity. He argued that estranged family members generally need humility, acknowledgment of past actions and an apology before genuine healing can begin.
“The situations I have witnessed over the years have made me realise that there always needs to be a mea culpa, some humility and acknowledgment of what has been done,” he wrote.
That could leave Harry facing a difficult choice if he hopes to rebuild his relationship with William. Returning to the UK may bring the brothers into closer proximity, but it could also expose unresolved tensions that have remained largely out of sight.
Ultimately, greater contact could provide an opportunity for the brothers to begin repairing their relationship, but it could just as easily make their differences more visible.
As Dr Max noted, time will reveal whether Harry is prepared to acknowledge what went wrong and take the steps necessary to regain his brother’s trust.
