Prince William’s Silence on Earl Spencer Drama Reflects Powerful Lesson From His Hardest Year
Prince William’s decision to remain silent over Earl Spencer’s memoir reportedly reflects a lesson shaped by what he previously described as the hardest year of his life, with the future King increasingly determined not to be drawn publicly into family controversies.
The Prince of Wales demonstrated that approach during a recent visit to a community cinema in Acton, where reporters called out questions about his uncle’s book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.
William, dressed in a navy suit and tie, did not stop or respond. Instead, he walked inside and concentrated on the engagement, offering no indication of his private thoughts about Spencer’s controversial claims.
His silence is particularly notable given the deeply personal subject involved. William was only 15 when Diana died in 1997 and famously walked behind his mother’s coffin during her funeral procession.
More recently, William faced an extraordinarily difficult period in 2024 when both his wife, Princess Kate, and his father, King Charles, were diagnosed with cancer.
Speaking on Apple TV’s The Reluctant Traveler, William later described the strain of maintaining his responsibilities while supporting his family. “It’s been dreadful, it’s probably been the hardest year of my life,” he said.
“So trying to keep everything on track has been really difficult,” William added, offering a rare acknowledgement of the pressure he experienced during that period.
Royal commentator Phil Dampier believes those experiences have helped shape the way William and Kate now respond to controversy, particularly when disputes involve deeply personal family matters.
“William and Kate have had a policy of never complain, never explain,” Dampier said, pointing to the Prince’s refusal to answer reporters’ questions about Spencer’s memoir as an example.
William has not always remained silent when serious allegations involving the monarchy have emerged. Following Harry and Meghan’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey and allegations concerning race within the Royal Family, William publicly declared: “We are very much not a racist family.”
However, Dampier believes the future King is increasingly establishing the style he intends to adopt as his responsibilities grow, particularly following years of controversies involving relatives including Prince Harry and Andrew.
“He’s setting the standard for how he wants to play it,” Dampier said, arguing that William’s difficult experiences have provided him with greater “perspective and inner strength.”
The commentator also pointed to seemingly smaller personal decisions as evidence that William is comfortable establishing his own approach. During a recent visit to Scotland’s Isle of Bute, William wore an anorak rather than adopting the traditional kilt sometimes worn by King Charles.
“He doesn’t like wearing them and once he’s made his mind up, he tends to stick to it,” Dampier said. While William has not explained his silence over Spencer’s memoir himself, his decision to continue working without engaging publicly with the controversy fits the more restrained approach the commentator believes is increasingly defining the future King.
