Prince William Makes Calculated Diana Move as Prince Harry Faces Pressure Over Diana Documentary Plans

Prince William’s reported decision to stay away from a new Princess Diana documentary is being described as a potentially calculated move leaving Prince Harry to face the scrutiny surrounding any documentary plans.

Diana remains an intensely personal subject for both brothers, and speculation over how they will commemorate the August 2027 anniversary has raised questions about whether the occasion could finally provide some common ground between them.

Recent reports suggested William had rejected approaches about participating in a Diana documentary because he did not want to be “pitted against his brother” while Harry explored a separate project of his own.

That decision initially appeared to offer a rare sign that William wanted to avoid creating another source of competition with Harry after years of tension between the brothers.

However, royal commentator Tom Sykes has suggested there could be more behind William’s position, arguing that discussions surrounding a potential documentary may involve considerably more than simply deciding whether the Prince of Wales appears on camera.

William has reportedly held discussions with the BBC’s Director-General. While broadcasters would not necessarily require the Prince’s permission to make a programme about Diana, cooperation from royal circles could influence the level of access available.

“I suspect there is negotiations going on to see who is going to be allowed to make this film, what level of access they are going to be given to the Royal Archives, which friends of Diana’s are going to be given the nod to cooperate,” Sykes said.

According to the commentator, William may simply believe becoming the public face of such a project would be inappropriate, particularly while his estranged brother is reportedly pursuing his own Diana tribute.

Sykes said William does not want to become the “front man” for the project, adding that doing so would be especially complicated “with your brother doing” something similar.

Meanwhile, reports have claimed Harry is considering a documentary among several possible projects commemorating his mother. Woman’s Day sources have also alleged the Duke would like Meghan Markle to be “heavily involved” in a television tribute, although no final production plans have been officially announced.

Royal editor Russell Myers has questioned the commercial prospects of another Sussex documentary, pointing to the mixed reception of projects released following the couple’s highly watched Harry & Meghan series.

Myers referenced Heart of Invictus and Polo while arguing that subsequent productions had not generated the same level of attention as Harry and Meghan’s original documentary series.

“Archewell productions are apparently going to produce it, as they’ve got this sort of first look deal with Netflix,” Myers said while discussing the reported Diana project.

He went on to criticise the idea of Harry taking the lead on another documentary about his mother. His comments represent an assessment of the reported project rather than confirmation that a film has been commissioned or completed.

William’s decision to remain outside the documentary spotlight could therefore leave Harry facing most of the public reaction if his proposed tribute moves forward. Whether that represents a deliberate strategy by William or simply his personal preference remains unclear, but with Diana’s anniversary approaching, the brothers appear increasingly likely to pursue separate ways of protecting and commemorating their mother’s legacy.
