Princess Anne Returns to Royal Duties After Zara and Mike Tindall’s Heartbreaking Family Loss

Princess Anne has made her first royal appearance since her daughter Zara Tindall and son in law Mike Tindall were hit by the heartbreaking loss of Mike’s father, Phil Tindall, returning to official duties for an important charitable cause.

The Princess Royal stepped out on Monday as other senior members of the Royal Family continued carrying out engagements on behalf of the monarchy.

Anne’s return comes after Mike announced that his father had died at the age of 80 following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Phil had lived with the condition for more than two decades, and Mike has previously spoken openly about watching his father’s health deteriorate over the years.

Recent reports suggested that although Mike had known his father’s condition was serious, the loss remained deeply painful for him and the wider Tindall family.

One particularly emotional aspect was said to be that Zara and their three children — Mia, Lena and Lucas — never had the opportunity to know Phil as Mike remembered him before Parkinson’s increasingly affected his life.

Anne has a warm relationship with her son-in-law, and while there has been no public statement confirming her private response to Phil’s death, she would naturally have been aware of the difficult period facing Zara, Mike and their children.

Despite the family sadness, the Princess Royal has now resumed her busy programme of public engagements, continuing the demanding schedule that has made her one of the monarchy’s most active working members.

In her role as Royal Patron of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Anne met former England rugby league star and rugby union coach Sir Kevin Sinfield during his 7 in 7 Challenge.

The meeting took place at the University of York Athletics track, where Anne showed her support for Sinfield’s continued fundraising and awareness efforts surrounding motor neurone disease.

Sinfield has become a prominent campaigner for people affected by MND, with his endurance challenges raising awareness and funds following the diagnosis of his late friend and former Leeds Rhinos teammate Rob Burrow.

Anne’s return to public duties is not limited to that appearance. Further engagements on her schedule underline how quickly the Princess Royal has returned to her established working routine.

As Honorary President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Anne is also scheduled to attend the WISE Annual Conference and Awards in London. In another role, as President of Carers Trust, she will visit Carers Plus Yorkshire to mark its 30th anniversary.

The appearances come during an emotional period for Anne’s family, but there is no indication she intends to reduce her official workload. While Zara and Mike continue dealing privately with their loss, the Princess Royal’s return shows her pressing ahead with the extensive programme of charitable and public duties that has defined her decades of royal service.
