Princess Anne Makes Special Southport Appearance as Young Sailors Take Centre Stage
Princess Anne brought a royal touch to Southport as she joined young sailors for a major Sea Cadets competition, carrying a pretty posy of flowers while putting the spotlight firmly on the next generation of watersports enthusiasts.
The Princess Royal visited Waterside Lodge on Marine Drive in her role as Patron of the Marine Society and Sea Cadets, continuing her longstanding commitment to the organisation and its work with young people.
Anne attended the National Sailing and Windsurfing Regatta, which brought Sea Cadets together from across the country for an important weekend of competition on Southport Marine Lake.
Young participants were given the opportunity to demonstrate their sailing and windsurfing abilities while competing alongside fellow cadets from different regions.
However, the event was about more than simply winning. Teamwork, confidence and practical skills were also at the heart of the weekend as participants challenged themselves on the water.
Anne’s attendance was particularly fitting because of her close association with the organisation. In addition to serving as its patron, the hardworking royal holds the position of Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps.
Her appearance had been officially included in the Royal Diary, but that did little to reduce the excitement among residents as signs of the royal arrival began appearing around Southport.
Locals reported seeing a large helicopter land on a field near Montgomery Avenue, generating considerable interest before the Princess Royal made her appearance at the waterside event.
Waterside Lodge, located beside Southport Marine Lake, provided a picturesque setting for the national competition as competitors took to the water in front of organisers, supporters and their royal guest.
Anne was also pictured carrying a colourful bouquet during the visit, adding a softer touch to an engagement centred on sailing, competition and the development of young people.
The Princess Royal has maintained a famously busy schedule of engagements and continues to support a wide range of military, charitable, sporting and maritime organisations.
Her involvement with the Sea Cadets reflects several of those interests, particularly the organisation’s emphasis on discipline, teamwork, leadership and giving young people practical opportunities outside the classroom.
The royal visit also provided valuable attention for Southport Marine Lake and Waterside Lodge, both of which help create opportunities for young people to experience watersports and other outdoor activities.
