Prince William’s secret childhood dream revealed despite knowing from childhood that he was destined to be King, according to a former school friend who has revealed the future monarch’s surprising career ambition.

The Prince of Wales has spoken openly in recent years about how he hopes to approach the monarchy differently when he eventually takes the throne, including his desire to bring meaningful change to his future role.

However, William apparently once imagined a very different future for himself, even though his position as the next generation of the Royal Family meant his eventual responsibilities were already well understood.

William was introduced to the expectations surrounding his future royal role from a young age, with Palace preparations reportedly becoming more structured as he entered his teenage years.

Despite understanding the path ahead, the young prince apparently still allowed himself to consider what he might have chosen to do if his future had not already been largely determined by birth.

Before attending Eton College, William studied at Ludgrove School in Berkshire, where he was a classmate of Humphrey Ker, who later became an actor, comedian and writer.

Ker has since shared a memorable story from their school years, recalling an occasion when William and his classmates were asked to write about what careers they wanted when they grew up.

As might be expected from a group of schoolboys, the answers included a range of ambitious professions, with some pupils imagining themselves becoming sports stars or pursuing adventurous careers.

“Some people said fighter pilot, Arsenal striker, this and that, the usual,” Ker told The Telegraph while recalling the exercise and the different ambitions shared by his classmates.

William’s answer, however, immediately stood out. Rather than mentioning his inevitable future position within the monarchy, the young prince declared: “I want to be a policeman.”

According to Ker, the answer caused the classroom to erupt with laughter — not necessarily because becoming a policeman was an unusual ambition, but because everyone already understood that William’s future was different.

“And everyone burst out laughing, because of course he wasn’t going to be a policeman,” Ker recalled. Even as children, his classmates apparently understood the extraordinary responsibility that awaited their royal schoolmate.

“We all knew everything that was going to happen in his life – he was going to be king,” Ker added, highlighting how William’s royal destiny was already part of everyday reality even during his school years.

The childhood story offers a glimpse of William imagining a life outside the path prepared for him. He may never have had the opportunity to pursue his policing dream, but the anecdote shows that even a future King once wondered what he might become if the choice had been entirely his own.
