Prince Harry’s Plea to Uncle Emerges as Charles Spencer Takes Surprise Step to Protect Him
Prince Harry is reportedly trying to remain neutral between his father King Charles and uncle Charles Spencer, as Diana’s brother takes the significant step of publicly clearing the Duke of any involvement in his controversial new memoir.
Harry’s position has become increasingly delicate following the publication of Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, in which Spencer makes a series of disputed claims involving the King and events surrounding Princess Diana’s death.
The book prompted an unusually direct response from Buckingham Palace, with Charles said to have been deeply frustrated by allegations concerning private conversations from almost three decades ago.
Reports have suggested some of the King’s advisers were reluctant to respond publicly to Spencer’s claims, fearing that engaging with individual allegations could prolong the controversy surrounding Diana and the monarchy.
Harry, meanwhile, has been attempting to improve his relationship with his father following years of tension, leaving his close connection with the Spencer family under renewed scrutiny.
“Harry has been trying to skate down the middle and insist that he’s not taking sides, but that’s just not possible,” an unnamed source told Woman’s Day.
The insider claimed Harry could face pressure to distance himself from his uncle, arguing that otherwise some within royal circles could interpret his silence as support for Spencer’s allegations against Charles.
Spencer, however, has now taken a notable step to remove Harry from the controversy. Speaking to Gayle King on CBS Mornings, he stressed that his family had no involvement in preparing the memoir.
The Earl said “nobody knew” about the project apart from his wife and publishers until shortly before it was publicly announced, specifically highlighting Harry when rejecting suggestions of family involvement.
Spencer explained that because Harry had stayed with him during the summer, he was particularly concerned people would assume his nephew had somehow contributed to the book. He insisted it was important that Harry was not considered “in any way involved.”
Despite that clarification, the Woman’s Day source claimed the controversy has complicated Harry’s efforts to rebuild trust with his father after he had allegedly begun making progress towards getting back into the King’s “good graces.”
The insider further alleged that Charles and his advisers could now be questioning Harry’s position if he refuses to distance himself from Spencer. There has been no official indication from Buckingham Palace that reconciliation efforts with Harry have been suspended because of the memoir.
Harry is also unlikely to simply abandon his maternal family. The Spencers have remained an important connection to Diana throughout his life, and Harry’s relationship with his uncle does not itself establish that he supports the allegations made in the book.
For now, Spencer’s decision to publicly clear Harry of involvement may help separate his nephew from the increasingly bitter dispute. Harry has not endorsed his uncle’s claims, leaving him attempting to preserve two deeply personal relationships with the father he reportedly hopes to reconcile with and the maternal family that has remained an important link to Diana.
