Piers Morgan Launches Fresh Criticism on Harry and Meghan Over Royal Titles Before UK Appearance
Piers Morgan has reignited his public feud with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, branding the couple “unofficial grifters” and accusing them of exploiting their royal titles ahead of their upcoming joint appearance in the UK.
The outspoken broadcaster wasted little time responding to reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were preparing for their first joint public engagement since returning to Britain. Morgan took aim at the description of their planned visit as an “official” outing, arguing that they no longer represent the monarchy in a working capacity.
Writing on X, the former Good Morning Britain presenter declared: “They’re not doing anything ‘official’ – they’re a pair of unofficial grifters.”
Morgan went further, accusing the couple of “exploiting their royal titles in the most shameless manner.” His remarks added another chapter to his long-running criticism of the Sussexes and their decision to step away from royal duties.
The controversy centres on the distinction between official royal engagements and charitable activities undertaken privately. Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior working royals in 2020 and have since pursued independent projects while retaining their Duke and Duchess titles.
A community note attached to the discussion on X sought to clarify that the couple’s joint visits should not be described as official royal engagements. It cited a letter from the Lord Chamberlain issued on King Charles’s behalf, which reportedly stated that their charitable work “is a personal matter to them both and undertaken in their private capacity.”
The distinction is significant because a public appearance involving a charitable organisation does not automatically make it an engagement carried out on behalf of the monarch or the Royal Family.
Morgan’s comments have nevertheless revived a broader debate about whether Harry and Meghan should continue using their royal titles while operating independently of the institution. Critics have argued that the arrangement creates confusion, while supporters maintain that the couple are entitled to retain their titles and pursue their own work.
The broadcaster has a long history of criticising Meghan, particularly following her and Harry’s explosive 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. That dispute played a prominent role in Morgan’s departure from Good Morning Britain after an on-air disagreement over his remarks about the Duchess.
Morgan walked away from the ITV programme after the controversy and subsequently launched Piers Morgan Uncensored, his online show that has continued to feature his outspoken views on public figures and current affairs.
His latest attack comes as the programme moves into a new phase, with Morgan announcing a paid subscription product for the show.
The timing has prompted further discussion online, with social media users divided over his comments about the Sussexes. Some supported his criticism of the couple’s use of royal titles, while others accused him of continuing a personal campaign against Harry and Meghan.
The exchange highlights how the Sussexes’ independent public activities continue to attract scrutiny, particularly when their appearances are described using language associated with the monarchy.
For now, Morgan’s remarks remain his own assessment rather than an official position of the Royal Family. Harry and Meghan’s upcoming visit is expected to be undertaken in their private capacity, and there has been no indication that the Palace has endorsed the broadcaster’s criticism.
