Meghan Markle Compared To Angelina Jolie After Controversial Geneva Speech Sparks Backlash

Meghan Markle has come under fresh criticism after her latest international appearance triggered comparisons to Hollywood humanitarian Angelina Jolie.

The Duchess of Sussex faced backlash following her speech in Geneva, where she spoke about creating safer online spaces for children and raising awareness about the dangers young people face in the digital world.

While Meghan’s supporters praised her advocacy work and willingness to spotlight sensitive issues affecting families, critics argued that the appearance reflected an attempt to recreate the type of global influence she once held as a working royal.

Royal commentator Tom Sykes sharply criticized the Duchess, accusing her of attempting to position herself as a “cut price Angelina Jolie” through high profile humanitarian style engagements.

Sykes questioned why Meghan chose to step away from the royal family if she ultimately wanted to continue delivering speeches on major global issues and maintaining an international advocacy role.

The commentator suggested that the type of work Meghan is now pursuing closely resembles the responsibilities she would have carried out had she remained a senior member of the monarchy alongside Prince Harry.

He argued that the royal platform offered extraordinary global reach and influence, adding that many people struggle to understand why the Sussexes walked away from such a prominent public role in 2020.

During his criticism, Sykes also revisited long standing tensions linked to the couple’s departure from royal duties, often referred to as “Megxit,” and questioned whether the personal disputes that emerged publicly were worth sacrificing such influence.

The commentator referenced several past controversies involving the Sussexes, including reported disagreements and family tensions that became major talking points after Harry and Meghan settled in California.

Sykes further claimed that Meghan’s Geneva speech created a surreal atmosphere because it closely mirrored the kind of advocacy associated with senior royals or international humanitarian figures.

The Duchess delivered the speech in partnership with organizations focused on child wellbeing and digital safety, stressing the importance of protecting young people from online harm while still allowing healthy technological progress.

Critics however argued that Meghan’s increasing involvement in international campaigns appears carefully designed to reposition her public image on the global stage.

The comparison to Angelina Jolie emerged because the Oscar winning actress became internationally respected for her humanitarian work through the United Nations and refugee advocacy efforts over many years.

Jolie famously addressed the United Nations General Assembly in 2019 during her tenure as a Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, building a reputation that extended beyond Hollywood fame.

According to Sykes, international institutions and advocacy organizations may find Meghan beneficial because of her global recognition and ability to generate media attention around campaigns.

At the same time, he suggested these partnerships allow the Duchess to cultivate an image similar to internationally respected humanitarian figures without needing formal political approval or public office.

Before marrying Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan had reportedly expressed interest in humanitarian and ambassador style work, making her current public direction unsurprising to some royal observers.

Supporters of the Duchess however insist the criticism is unfair and argue Meghan has consistently used her platform to discuss issues affecting women, families, mental health, and online safety long before stepping into royal life.

Others believe the harsh comparisons simply reflect the continued scrutiny Harry and Meghan face whenever they participate in international events or public advocacy campaigns.

As the Sussexes continue building their post royal identity in the United States, debates over Meghan’s evolving public role and global ambitions show little sign of slowing down.
