Prince Harry Recalls Prince William and Kate’s Surprising Reaction to Meghan Markle

Prince Harry’s memorable account of Prince William and Princess Kate’s reaction when he first revealed that Meghan was “a new woman” in his life.

Before Meghan officially became part of the Royal Family, Harry was reportedly uncertain about how his older brother, Prince William, and sister-in-law, Princess Kate, would react to the woman he had fallen in love with.

Harry recalled the memorable moment in his 2023 memoir, Spare, when he finally told William and Kate that there was “a new woman” in his life during a dinner together.

According to the Duke of Sussex, the then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had already sensed that something was happening and were immediately eager to find out more about Harry’s mysterious new girlfriend.

“Who is she?” William and Kate reportedly asked, keen to discover the identity of the woman who had captured Harry’s attention.

Harry initially attempted to keep the details about Meghan under wraps, offering only a few clues before eventually revealing more about her background. “She’s an actress,” Harry told them, prompting an interested reaction from William and Kate.

He then added another important detail, telling his brother and sister-in-law that his new girlfriend was American, which appeared to make them even more curious.

Harry eventually revealed Meghan’s name and explained that she starred in the popular legal drama Suits, which had already attracted a dedicated audience.

According to Harry’s account, William and Kate’s mouths “fell open” after hearing the news, before the couple exchanged a look that left him wondering about their reaction.

William then reportedly responded with a colourful exclamation, leaving Harry momentarily confused about why his revelation had created such a dramatic response.

The reason soon became clear when William and Kate admitted that they were not simply occasional viewers of Suits but were, as Harry described them, “regular – nay, religious – viewers” of the popular series.

Any concerns Harry may have had about whether William and Kate would welcome Meghan into the family were suddenly replaced by an entirely different worry.

“I’d thought Willy and Kate might not welcome Meg into the family,” Harry recalled, before joking that he now had to worry about his brother and sister-in-law “hounding her for an autograph”.
