Prince Edward’s Former Girlfriend Makes Heartfelt Confession About Their Relationship Decades Later
Prince Edward’s former girlfriend, Ruthie Henshall, has opened up about their relationship decades after their romance ended, revealing that she and the Duke of Edinburgh remain close friends. The actress shared warm memories of their time together while promoting her new memoir.
Before becoming the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward was in a relationship with acclaimed West End actress Ruthie Henshall for around five years. Although their romance ended many years ago, the pair have remained on good terms.
The 59-year-old performer revealed that she still speaks with King Charles’ younger brother several times each year. According to Henshall, Edward has continued one thoughtful tradition throughout the years.
She said the Duke never forgets to telephone her on her birthday, describing the gesture as a reflection of the enduring friendship they have maintained since their relationship came to an end.
Henshall discussed their romance ahead of the publication of her new memoir, which was inspired after she discovered old diaries, letters, and romantic correspondence while clearing boxes stored in her garage.
Before including details about their relationship in the book, the actress said she wanted to speak to Prince Edward personally. She explained that it was important for him to know what the memoir would contain.
“I didn’t want to blindside him,” Henshall told Hello! magazine. “I wanted to assure him that it wasn’t a kiss and tell. My experience with him and his family was really rather lovely.”
According to the actress, Prince Edward responded warmly to her phone call. “He thanked me,” she revealed, adding that she appreciated his gracious reaction.
Despite their relationship ending decades ago, Henshall said their friendship has remained strong. “Both our lives moved on, but we have a great friendship,” she explained, adding that she still has “so much love” for the Duke.
Reflecting on life after their split, the actress said she believes Prince Edward and her former partner, actor John Gordon Sinclair, both found the people they were truly meant to be with.
“He has ended up with the right person, as has John Gordon Sinclair,” she said. “I’m a complicated lady to have a relationship with, and so it gives me great joy to see two people I love so dearly still be happy with the perfect person for them.”
Henshall’s memoir revisits what she describes as “a very passionate affair” with Prince Edward during London’s thriving musical theatre scene in the 1980s and 1990s. The book explores their relationship while reflecting on a significant chapter in both of their lives.
Today, Prince Edward is married to Duchess Sophie, and the couple continue to play prominent roles as working members of the Royal Family. Henshall’s recollections offer a rare glimpse into the Duke’s earlier years, while highlighting the lasting friendship the former couple have maintained long after their romance came to an end.
