Palace Shares Duchess Sophie’s Powerful Letter as Meghan Markle Backs Girls Education With Malala

Buckingham Palace has shared a heartfelt letter from Duchess Sophie celebrating girls’ education, bringing fresh attention to a cause Meghan Markle also highlighted through her latest partnership with Malala Yousafzai on International Day of the Girl.

On October 11, the Royal Family marked the occasion by publishing a personal message from the Duchess of Edinburgh addressed to the teachers, parents and students of Juba Diocesan Model Secondary School in South Sudan.

Sophie’s letter celebrated the school’s 20th anniversary, recognising its achievements and the values it has continued to promote within its community.

“It is my great pleasure to congratulate you on your 20th anniversary, which you are proudly celebrating this year,” the Duchess wrote, recalling her own visit to the school in March 2020.

She added that she was pleased to hear of the institution’s continuing success, highlighting the importance of the work being carried out by its teachers and students.

The Duchess then turned to the wider role of education, describing it as one of the most valuable resources for building a better future and creating opportunities for people around the world.

“Education remains our most precious resource in building a brighter future for all,” Sophie wrote, explaining that learning can help people overcome poverty, access opportunities and work towards more fulfilling lives.

A particularly important part of her message focused on the efforts made by the school to help more girls attend classes and receive an education.

Sophie stressed that communities could only succeed when all their members had the opportunity to participate, underlining the importance of giving girls the same chance to learn and develop as boys.

She also emphasised that girls and boys should be empowered to learn and work together, both now and in the future, before offering her best wishes to everyone connected with the school.

The Palace accompanied the message with a photograph of Sophie from her visit to Juba Secondary School in South Sudan in 2020, bringing a personal connection to the anniversary tribute.

The letter also coincided with Meghan’s own International Day of the Girl announcement, in which the Duchess of Sussex revealed a partnership with Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai.

Meghan announced that 100% of net proceeds from selected As Ever jams and teas would support the Malala Fund and its work to help girls access free, safe and quality education.

The initiative connects Meghan’s lifestyle brand with an established campaign for educational opportunities, while Sophie’s letter highlights the importance of education through her longstanding royal engagements.

Although the two messages came from different royal households and initiatives, both placed girls’ education and the opportunities it creates at the centre of their International Day of the Girl activities.

Neither statement indicated that Sophie was responding directly to Meghan. Instead, their messages independently underscored the importance of helping girls learn, participate fully in their communities and build brighter futures.
